Very popular place for locals as well as tourists. Beautiful scenery, great hikes up into the hills (mountains). Our favorite was driving 20 minutes outside SLC and visiting Cottonwood Canyon. We had a tour of Mormon Square which was very interesting and we also had a visit to the Natural History Museum. We stayed at the Marriott City Center in Salt Lake City. Our trip took us to Salt Lake City UT to Jackson Hole WY to Yellowstone NP and into Helena MT. We are a family of 4 - parents and daughters 21 and 17. The National Elk Refuge Center which is adjacent to the visitor center and is where you get the popular winter sleigh ride tickets. Rangers will give demonstrations with live eagles, hawks and owls as part of the National Elk Refuge and Teton Raptor Center " Feathered Friday program". During the winter elk gather in this area as well. The Elk migration comes right through this area. The observation deck is situated to allow you to see over the Elk Refuge. The visitor center has taxidermy displays throughout the building, dioramas, and museum displays of the fauna, flora and geology of Jackson Hole, the National Elk Refuge and the Grand Teton National Park. If you wish to explore the National Elk Refuge this is where you pick -up that information. On the second floor which has a lot of taxidermy, naturalists will answer your questions. There is a Junior Ranger Program available as well. A short film on Jackson Hole and the surrounding area can be seen in their theater. The visitor center also has a free water bottle filling station, restrooms and a nice gift shop/book store. You can get instruction as to what to do if you are confronted by a bear and how to properly apply a bear spray. Rangers will direct you to where even a short hike will get you to a beautifully scenic overlook. Besides expert advice from rangers, there are maps and brochures. The Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center is staffed by seven non-profits, government agencies, private agencies and volunteer staff. To get it right you need a plan constructed by a knowledgeable person to avoid a hit or miss experience. The area around Jackson Hole is vast with distances between sites of interest many miles apart. You might think that you got this trip only to find that you missed this or that because you were not aware. The National Elk Refuge is an excellent place to visit to see first hand the state of Wyoming’s wildlife and epic landscapes.I have found that visitor centers should always be your first stop. The refuge’s valley also is home to many other endangered animals like bison, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and even rare sightings of wolves and grizzly bears. The best time to visit the refuge is between the months of November and April when the elk have migrated to the valley. Visitors can take a winter sleigh ride powered by two large horses to get a closer look at the wildlife during the winter months. When spring arrives, and the snow begins to recede, the elk make their way back north to Yellowstone in pursuit of the sprouting spring grass. Every year, around fall, an estimated 7,500 elk make their way to the refuge to protect themselves from the high snow accumulations of Yellow Stone National Park. The National Elk Refuge was created to protect the largest migration of elk in the world. One of the largest elk herd sanctuaries in the world is located North of the town of Jackson. The 24,700 acres of protected lands provides a safe haven for elk from the harsh winter conditions of Yellowstone National Park. The National Elk Refuge is a must see the next time you’re in Jackson, Wyoming.
